"And then I want it to feel like..." Between 1991 and 1999, NY artist Katy Schimert has asked me to shoot 4 of her films. They've been shown in museums and galleries worldwide, from the Whitney Bienalle to the Tate Modern and MoCA in LA. Her films are an extension of her drawings, with an intimate relationship with the landscape, the masculine and the feminine. She directed these films by communicating her intentions through koans and gesticulations that I was to solve and translate into images. Three of the films included Oliver "Stymie" Reinsch. We were both sculpture students of Katy's so it entirely made sense for us to make films. Oliver was often asked to do impossibly dangerous actions and always without any safety gear. He claimed a 150 foot sheer face for "Lancelot", repeatedly drowned without air in "Oedipus" and was frozen solid in "The Astronaut." "Icarus", the final film, featured a young Josh Lucas who was asked get strapped to me as we parasailed over the Hudson for the flying scenes. Each film required custom rigging a super-8 camera, either for underwater use or a gimbal shot on the floor of the NY Stock Exchange. Oliver and I would usually find an alternative way to use Katy's handmade costumes, bowling as an astronaut in Buffalo and going condom shopping in St. John wearing a ceramic Trojan costume. These are the most memorable projects of my life.
